This article touches on interesting people with one of these surnames encountered during my research. They are not related to our family.

There is a William Henry Taker in Sydney. The New South Wales Police Gazette reports that: “James Murphy, alias Thomas Jones, alias Thomas Joyce (49), William Henry Taker (30), and Thomas Joseph Murphy (26), charged in company with assaulting John Kirkland and robbing him of 3s (recovered), have been arrested by Constable Magill, Sydney Police. Committed for trial at Quarter Sessions. Bail allowed. James Murphy is identical with offender same name (vide Photo.-book No 49, page 87)“. [01] The Police Gazette two months later reported that they were tried at the Sydney Quarter Sessions on 17 January 1918. Taker received a sentence of 4 months hard labour, the younger Murphy six months, and the older Murphy was “bound over in his own recognisance to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for 3 years, in default to serve a further 3 months hard labour.” [02] A further issue of the Gazette has Taker in the list “Return of Prisoners Discharged to Freedom or on License.” Taker was at Long Bay State Penitentiary. It does provide more details about him: He was born in England in 1887; was a painter; was 5 feet 6 and 7/8 inches tall with brown hair and blue eyes; and appears in the Police Photo Book No 86, p186. [03] This latter information would seem to confirm that William Henry is not one of “our” Takers.
