He was known as Harry from early on. His birth certificate apparently reads Victor Henry Hiah, as this is what is recorded on the birth certificates of the siblings who followed him. While living in Perth he was on the electoral rolls of 1903 and 1906 as Henry Hiah

He was living in Perth from at least 1903, initially with his brother Edward and sister-in-law Sadie (Sarah Whittham). We don’t know when he began living with Bessie Gipp, but their first son – Norman Joseph – was born on 4 December 1905.

Harry married Bessie Dorothy “Dolly” Gipp in Perth on 25 February 1915. By this time the couple had five children and a sixth – George Robert – was born a month later.
