1874:    Eleanor Hiah was born on 17 December 1874 at Browns Diggings, near Smythesdale, where the family was living. She was the second child and eldest daughter of William Hiah and Julia Hiah (nee Teager). Her birth was registered by her mother and grandmother (Ellen Teager) on 22 January 1875 in Smythesdale. Her name is recorded as “Ellenor” on the birth registration and on that of her next sibling, Winifred. The “Eleanor” spelling was being used by 1881 and her sister Mary’s birth certificate. [01]

1880:    The family was living in Linton by about 1880. Eleanor and possibly her elder brother, Edward, attended one of the Linton schools.

1904:    By 1904, Eleanor was living in Sydney. She married Patrick Henry “Paddy” Burke, a labourer originally from County Galway in Ireland, on 21 December 1904. Burke was the son of John Burke, a draper, and Bridget Keany.

1953:    Eleanor died on 9 July 1953 at the home of her niece, Maude Blake (nee Hosking), at 18 Prince Street, Moorabbin. There was a private funeral on 13 July and Eleanor was buried with Paddy Burke at Fawkner Cemetery.
